What your savings actually look like, in numbers

Example: 4-person household in the EKS supply area, 4,500 kWh annual consumption, 50% share supplied via LEG.

Annual consumption
4,500 kWh
Current EKS variable grid fees
~18.94 Rp./kWh
Share supplied through the LEG
50% Γ— 4,500 kWh = 2,250 kWh
Grid fee discount (StromVV Art. 19h)
3.19 Rp./kWh
Your saving per year

Plus the lower LEG energy price: in practice, total savings for a typical household in the EKS area sit between CHF 100 and CHF 250 per year, depending on LEG share and consumption.

Five things that decide how much you save

Your concrete saving comes from the combination of five variables. LEG membership itself is free β€” what you save depends on how these stack up.

πŸ“Š

Your annual consumption

More kWh means more absolute saving. A 4,500-kWh household saves between CHF 100 and CHF 250 per year in a typical Swiss grid area.

⚑

Your grid operator's standard tariff

The more expensive your operator, the bigger the gap to the LEG rate. EKS customers save 3.19 Rp./kWh, CKW customers 1.30 Rp./kWh β€” same law, different baseline.

πŸ”€

Your LEG share

How much of your consumption is covered locally via the community. Typical range is 30–60%, depending on solar production in your area and your load profile.

🏘️

The energy price in your community

Set contractually per LEG, usually between 18 and 22 Rp./kWh. This price is more stable than the standard tariff, which can change every quarter.

πŸ”Œ

The grid level of your supply

Default discount: 20% off variable grid fees. If you draw from the same low-voltage level (NE5) as the producer, you get up to 40% under StromVV Art. 19h.

What the LEG prices are legally based on

The grid fee discount is written into law

StromVV Art. 19h (the Swiss Electricity Supply Ordinance) sets the discount on variable grid fees for locally traded solar power within a LEG: 20% standard, up to 40% on the same low-voltage level (NE5). ElCom oversees how the rules are applied and publishes the tariff guidance yearly. The discount isn't a marketing promise β€” it's a legal obligation your grid operator has to honour.

What you pay as a consumer β€” and what you don't

There are no joining fees or switching costs for LEG membership. You keep your current electricity provider and contract. For the share of your consumption covered via the LEG, you pay the LEG rate to Upgrid. For the rest, your grid operator bills you as usual. So you don't pay twice β€” you pay less in total.

Your savings depend on one thing: your grid provider.
When you join an Upgrid community, you pay less for locally traded solar energy β€” and your grid operator applies a legally guaranteed discount on network fees. What you save depends on your provider's standard tariff.
Calculate your savings
ENERGY PRICE
You buy solar from your neighbours β€” at a rate between feed-in tariff and grid price. Typically 18–22 Rp./kWh instead of 27.7 Rp.
Varies by community
GRID FEE DISCOUNT
Your grid operator reduces the network fee on locally traded kWh. Fixed by law: 20% discount (StromVV Art. 19h).
Guaranteed by law
Combined effect: consumers save 0.91–3.19 Rp./kWh. Producers earn 0.33–7.45 Rp./kWh more than feed-in alone.
EKS consumers save 3.19 Rp./kWh. CKW consumers save 1.30 Rp./kWh. The law is the same β€” your provider's standard tariff determines the gap. The more expensive your provider, the bigger your savings with Upgrid.
